21st century education demands the birth of human resources who not only have mastery of knowledge, but also critical thinking skills, effective communication, creativity, collaboration, and sensitivity to educational and social problems. This condition places students as strategic subjects in developing learning and educational innovations that are adaptive to the challenges of the times.
As a young intellectual generation, students have great potential in producing innovative ideas, models and practices in the field of education. However, this potential requires a space for actualization that is structured, competitive and educational so that it can develop optimally. A forum is needed that not only functions as a competition venue, but also as a means of coaching, academic reflection, and strengthening character and competence for the 21st century.
The Annual Innovation on Learning and Education Competition (AILEC) is held as an annual competition that accommodates students' self-development through innovative work and performance in the fields of learning and education. AILEC is designed to encourage participants to integrate critical, analytical, creative, communicative and applied thinking skills in responding to actual educational issues, both at the conceptual and practical levels. To achieve this goal, AILEC holds three types of competitions that complement each other and represent a comprehensive spectrum of educational competencies.
The Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta (FKIP UMS) as one of the educational institutions for educational staff in Indonesia feels the need to accommodate these educational innovations through a competition. FKIP UMS organizes Annual Innovation on Learning and Education Competition (AILEC) for students for the first time in 2022. It is hoped that this activity can be held well every year. AILEC 2026 consists of four scopes of work being competed, namely:
- AILEC Debating Championship, which focuses on strengthening critical thinking skills, logical argumentation, academic literacy, and oral communication skills in responding to strategic and actual issues in the field of education and learning. Through this competition, participants are trained to convey ideas systematically, based on data, and uphold academic ethics and sportsmanship.
- Microteaching, which is designed to develop participants' pedagogical competencies in designing and practicing creative, interactive and learner-centered learning. Through this competition, participants are challenged to integrate innovative learning approaches, models, media and technology in short learning scenarios, thus reflecting professional abilities in designing and implementing meaningful learning processes.
- Business Model Canvas (BMC), which aims to encourage participants to develop educational innovation ideas that are not only creative, but also sustainable and have implementable value. This competition facilitates participants in designing business models or sustainability models for products, services or educational solutions using an entrepreneurial approach (edupreneurship), so that the resulting innovation has the potential to be developed and implemented in real terms.
The three fields of work above are competed at two different competition levels. First, the national level includes Entrepreneurship (BMC) and microteaching. Undergraduate students from both private and state universities and students from private and state schools in Indonesia can compete in these fields. Second, the international level includes English Debate Competition. Undergraduate students from universities in Indonesia and abroad can take part in this competition.
